First of all a huge thank you for taking the time to visit this page and being part of the 500 Miles challenge. You may be asking, well what is this all about? What is Charlie doing now? Well let me take you through what 500 Miles is all about.
As many of you know in May 2015 my uncle, Jim, sadly passed away after suffering from cancer. Now, Jim and I loved our walking, so much so that nearly every year we would go on holiday to the Lake District for a fortnight of walking and incessant banter. We loved climbing new mountains and exploring new routes and sharing each others company. Before Jim died I explained to him that I would like to do a charity fundraiser for a cause of his choice, sadly I didn't get the chance to tell him my idea. I wanted to do something that the two of us shared a passion for and of course a bit of a challenge as well. I have settled on walking 500 miles in a year but it is not just as simple as walking 500 miles in one year. These 500 miles will be in addition to the day to day wandering around, so what does that break down to? Roughly around 10 miles in a week. With a full time job and working evenings as well this could well be interesting. Now, I'm thinking 500 miles is a pretty easy target so I'm going more for lets get to 500 miles and see how much time we have got left. I have from now until the 31st December 23:59 to cram in as many walks and get as many miles as possible in.
Now I don't want this to be something that is boring and done by myself so I am asking for your help in various different ways. The (many) memories of the walks that Jim and I did were usually full of laughter and hilarity like, the time where Jim nearly took out a fell runner because he thought it was me creeping up behind him being silly, so I want YOU to come out and share in this experience too. I will be posting where and what I will be walking and I want as many of you to come out and join for as much as little as you want. Near or far I will be going walking so let me know if you want to join in and you can grab a lift with me. There will be some big walks and some small walks so if you feel a walk is going to be too much don't worry look out for another one and join me then. If you don't feel like walking but would like to give financially then look out for the details of how to donate to the chosen charity soon. If you have suggestions of where I should walk I would love to hear from you as this is about adventure and seeing new places as well. I will not be doing the same walk twice so your ideas are most welcome.
I would like this to be about Jim and for Jim. We spent so much time doing this sort of thing together, seeing amazing places and exploring new paths so for me this is not a challenge this is a privilege to carry on and raise money in memory of someone who meant the world to me. At the end of each walk I will do a short write up about it and give a milage update and how many more miles to go.
Like I said before even though I will be covering the whole 500 this is for us to do together and I would love your support, so grab your boots - we are going walking!
Look out for news of the first walk coming very soon and a post about the charity we will be walking for!
Thank you so much!
Charlie
